OUR STORY

Our Vision: Creating Opportunity One Tender at a Time

Faulkner-Smith Restaurant Group was founded on the belief that great businesses are built by serving people well.

Just eight years after two best friends founded Zaxby’s in Statesboro, Georgia, Todd Faulkner made a life-changing decision. After leaving a stable career in search of better work-life balance, he set out to build more than a restaurant business—he wanted to create a company where people could grow professionally while putting family first.

Todd partnered with his brother, Jeff, and their father, George, to open their first Zaxby’s restaurant in Winder, Georgia, in 1998. Although the Faulkner family had limited restaurant experience, they were inspired by Zaxby’s mission of enriching lives one person at a time. Their backgrounds in customer service, leadership, and business administration helped lay the foundation for a people-first organization.

By 2001, they had grown to two restaurants and built a team eager to grow alongside the business.

Around that same time, Sam Smith, a tennis professional in Atlanta, was exploring his next career opportunity. After initially being approved to develop Zaxby’s restaurants in Florida, he was presented with the opportunity to partner with the Faulkner family and immediately embraced it.

Sam completed Zaxby’s Chicken School and began working in the Winder restaurant, where he developed a passion for the restaurant industry. He continues to believe there is no better place to develop leadership skills than in a restaurant, where serving guests, developing people, and building high-performing teams happen every day.

Following George Faulkner's passing in 2021, Todd, Jeff, and Sam remained committed to the mission that has guided the company from the beginning: enriching lives through exceptional hospitality and meaningful community involvement.

Giving back has always been central to who we are. Todd served as Chairman of New Path in Barrow County, Jeff served on the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Board, and our leadership team continues to actively support education, mentorship, local schools, and charitable organizations throughout the communities we serve. We don't simply strive to develop great managers—we are committed to developing great leaders.

At the end of 2025, Todd and Jeff transitioned ownership to the next generation of the Faulkner family. Today, Nick, Jake, Claxton, and Sydney Faulkner are partners helping lead the company into its next chapter, while Shane Embrey, Director of Operations and partner, continues to play an integral role in the company's success

Today, Faulkner-Smith Restaurant Group proudly operates ten Zaxby’s restaurants throughout Northeast Georgia, with an eleventh location scheduled to open in early 2027. Building on our passion for developing great brands, we have also signed a development agreement to bring five Surcheros Fresh Mex restaurants to Northeast Georgia.

While our portfolio continues to grow, our purpose remains unchanged. We are committed to enriching lives by serving great food, investing in our people, supporting our communities, and creating opportunities for future generations. We believe our greatest success is measured not only by the restaurants we build, but by the people whose lives are better because of them.
